Contributed to academic activities in areas of teaching, research, and university service. Supervised 5 Ph.D. students, 5 MS students to date and an additional 5 students currently completing their Ph.D. Highly successful in teaching and student interaction at both undergraduate and graduate levels and initiated new curricula and teaching strategies. Participated actively in senior projects and undergraduate research initiatives and developed variety of opportunities for undergraduate students. Established a Tribology and Thermal Properties Laboratory and more recently added an electronic property measurement facility.

Contributed significantly to research efforts through funded programs from various agencies; NSF, DoD, DoE and industry. Research sponsorships as PI in excess of $ 7M to date over the last 8 years from federal, state and industrial sources. Key member of the team to successfully establish the NSF Materials Research Science and Engineering Center at Stony Brook in 1996 and recently renewed till 2005. Currently directing a $ 5M DARPA funded initiative on thermal spray based direct writing of mesoscale electronics and sensors systems. Co-directed research efforts on a "NIST-Advanced Technology Program" with Caterpillar Inc on Functionally Graded Materials. Developed programs in thermal barrier coatings, wear resistant coatings and functional materials synthesis etc. and initiated multidisciplinary collaboration with MIT, Santa Barbara, and various national laboratories.

Coordinator for the Strategic Partnership for Industrial Resurgence (SPIR) program for the College of Engineering and specifically for Materials Engineering for 3 years. Collaborating on joint research projects, proposals, and assistance in trouble shooting with numerous New York State companies in the area of materials processing and surface engineering. Acted as a liaison between faculty and New York State-industries in establishing a dialog aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of State-wide industries through high technology materials/processes.

Advanced Research Engineer (Materials Development)

Chemical and Metallurgical Division, Towanda, PA.

Principally involved in research, development, and processing of refractory metal compounds, refractory intermetallics, and composites, for a variety of automotive and aerospace applications. Utilized a unique plasma processing technology in the synthesis of Mo-based composite materials for automotive piston ring coating applications, and process development was performed on Y2O3 partially stabilized ZrO2 ceramics for thermal barrier applications. Powder processing, consolidation and mechanical property evaluation of MoSi2 intermetallics and its composites were conducted. Utilized advanced statistical methods for experimental design, process control and optimization. Fundamental studies were conducted on sintered and thermally sprayed WC-Co cermets in an effort to establish structure-mechanical property-wear relationships. During the four years gained significant experience in product commercialization, marketing, and administration.

Graduate Research Assistant (1986 - 1989)
Thermal Spray Laboratory,
State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Primarily involved in an NSF sponsored program on microstructural characterization of plasma sprayed materials, in an effort to develop a fundamental understanding of plasma spraying, and to establish 'processing-microstructure-property' relationships. Ph.D. dissertation concentrated on plasma processing effects on rapid solidification and microstructure development. The study eventually led to vacuum plasma spraying of thick and dense free-standing forms of Ni3Al, NiAl, Ni3Al-NiAl alloys and their composites, and their mechanical property evaluation. The goal was to synergistically apply rapid solidification and composite technology towards near-net-shape forming techniques for advanced materials.

Performed extensive research activities as a part of doctoral thesis at the Naval Research Laboratory's materials analysis beam line at the National Synchrotron Light Source of the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Was also actively involved in thermal spray processing of high Tc superconductors.
