Prof. Herman received his Ph.D. degree in 1961 from Northwestern University, following which he was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Paris. From 1962 to 1963 he was a Research Associate at Argonne National Laboratory. He was on the Faculty of the University of Pennsylvania until joining the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1968. He has been very active in the field of surface engineering, working with a wide range of industrial and government organizations, with a special emphasis on thermal sprayed protective coatings. He played a key role in forming the Thermal Spray Division of ASM International, becoming the Division's founding Chairman in 1986. Herman counsels industrial organizations who are investigating the potential uses of surface engineering and thermal spray in their manufacturing activities. He organized and convened the first Tri-Services Committee for creating Powder Materials Specifications, which were published in 1991. Herman and his colleagues hold frequent workshops for industrial participants on various aspects of thermal spray. Finally, in September of 1996, SUNY Stony Brook was awarded a 5 year NSF Materials Research Science and and Engineering Center, the Center for Thermal Spray Research. Between 1983 and 1998 Herman was Editor-in-Chief of the international journal, Materials Science & Engineering. He is now chairman of the journal's editorial board. Herman also edited a review series, Treatise on Materials Science & Technology, which has 33 volumes in print. Herman has over 200 publications, has edited various volumes on experimental methods in materials science, and has contributed to numerous edited volumes. He holds nine patents in materials and processes, based on both his academic research and jointly with industrial partners. His work, both research and teaching, ranges from corrosion resistant alloy coatings to plasma sprayed ceramic thermal barrier coatings and nano-based materials. Herman is a Fellow of ASM International and the American Ceramic Society and was elected to the International Academy of Ceramics in 1992. He was one of three initial Hall of Fame members of the Thermal Spray Society.
