Industrial Outreach

The Center for Thermal Spray Research has considerable experience in working with industry, both OEM thermal spray manufacturers and the engineering and manufacturing communities in general. It has consistently been our goal to create a mutually beneficial arrangement; we and our students learning form industry and our aiding the applied sector through consultation and long-term programmed studies. These arrangements have been successful in introducing numerous industrial concerns to the assets of thermal spray and have aided the transformation of thermal spray from a "band-aid" approach to a prime reliant constituent in many engineering designs.

The Center welcomes industrial participation in all aspects of the Center's activities, from sharing in research results to funded programs in specific study areas. Extensive facilities are available for exploratory research, materials processing, product development and materials testing.

Central to our outreach efforts is the Consortium on Thermal Spray Technology, which was initiated in April 2002. Many of the industries leading global companies participate in the Consortium and help to formulate the annual pre-competitive research goals which are carried out by senior members of the CTSR staff.

The Center also holds an annual 2-3 day workshop focused on a specific theme of interest to the thermal spray community. Previous themes have been, Linking Research to Practice and Life Cycle Assessments for Thermal Spray Coatings. In conjunction with the workshop, the Center offers a one-day introduction to thermal spray class that continues to be very well attended by engineers and scientists who may be new to the industry, or even to those who have had a few years experience but want to deepen their understanding of the process fundamentals.

Another source of information about the activities of the Center, both research and industrial, is through our semi-annual newsletter, Going Beyond The Surface, which is available both on-line in .pdf format as well as in hard copy.
