A Premier Opportunity for Teachers!

This is a no-cost activity for teachers to bring their students to a leading education and R&D institution of the nation!

All travel expenses and a mid-day meal are supported by CTSR - all that the teacher needs to do is meet the requirements detailed overleaf.

Science and mathematics teachers, or professors of college students, should read the following information carefully before making an application. Students at high schools or colleges should bring this information to the attention of their teachers!

What is a "Field Trip Program"? A group of up to 20 students are chaperoned by their faculty in a structured activity of "learning and discovery". The focus of this activity is engineering and science at USB within CTSR.

The activity normally occurs between 9:30 - 11:30 AM or 1:30 - 3:30 PM. CTSR is also available for visits 7-days a week, including evenings, and other time slots can be organized by special arrangement.

Boxed lunches are provided and so is the receipted cost of transportation on Long Island. Partial support is provided to groups from locations off Long Island.

The Field Trip Program involves visits to laboratories that perform world-acclaimed research in the following broad topics.
New coating technology.
The engineering of surfaces.
Sophisticated microscopy.
Complex surface analysis.
Computer analysis of materials.
Measuring the strength of materials.

How to Plan for a Field Trip Program

  1. The faculty (or sometimes even a motivated student!) makes contact with CTSR and the nature of the program is discussed. (Contact information is provided at the end of this brochure.)
  2. Representatives from CTSR visit the school/college in order to make initial contact and discuss science and engineering in very general terms. At this stage it is expected that a core group of students who wish to participate is identified.
  3. A date is made where the students and faculty advisor visit CTSR.
  4. The students and faculty advisor answer a short questionnaire to provide feedback to CTSR.

Who are the "Target" Students?

Who are the "Target" Faculty?

The Faculty will either be High School Teachers of Science and Mathematics or Professors of colleges. This is a no-cost opportunity to encourage your students to excel!

Other Opportunities that Can Emerge!

The students or faculty supporters who participate in the Field Trip Program are encouraged to apply for:
Summer Student Scholarships
CTSR Faculty Fellowships
These are fully paid positions where participants are invited to collaborate in hands-on research. (Information concern-ing these programs in available in another brochure.)

Student Responsibilities
The student responsibilities are quite simple:

Application Requirements

There is no application deadline since the Field Trip Program is active throughout the year. An "application" is normally initiated by placing a phone call to one of the contacts listed below.

Students and faculty are strongly urged to visit the CTSR web page (the address is given below) to gain more specific information about CTSR activities.
