Position is primarily responsible for Technical Customer

Specimen Preparation Engineer

The Electron Probe Instrumentation Center (EPIC) at Northwestern University
has an immediate opening for a specimen preparation expert. EPIC is a part
of the world renowned Materials Research Center (MRC) and the Department of
Materials Science & Engineering at Northwestern.
The EPIC facility serves over 120 users in all aspects of Scanning and
Transmission Electron Microscopy. The role of the specimen preparation
engineer is to assist users with their specimen preparation needs, including

electropolishing, ultramicrotomy, cutting/grinding/polishing, vacuum
evaporation etc.

This position is for a technician in the Intel Fab 12 Materials Lab TEM
group who will be responsible for TEM sample preparation. This job requires
working with engineers to develop a sample preparation strategy and taking
that task to completion. TEM sample preparation requires a high degree of
manual skill, judgment, dexterity, hand-eye coordination, steady hands and
good eyesight. The position requires operating precision mechanical
sectioning and polishing equipment (tripod polisher and dimpler), focused
ion beam (FIB) tools, and Ar-ion milling tools. High power optical
microscopes and dual-beam FIBs are used to determine precision cross-section
locations. TEM samples are extremely fragile and require extreme care and
good manual dexterity during handling. Auxiliary duties will also include
general upkeep of the TEM group labs, developing and printing TEM film and
labeling TEM prints. The ideal candidate will have a 2-year college or
technician degree in a science or engineering field and no less than 2-3
years experience operating TEM sample preparation equipment. The candidate
will have worked in an area where manual dexterity, independent operation

Integrated Reliability is looking for a Focused Ion Beam system
operator. This position requires 3 to 5 years of SEM experience,
and knowledge of semiconductor processing and layout. BSEE or BSMS
preferred.
Focused Ion Beam technology uses a highly focused beam of Ga ions to
remove and deposit material in sub-micron regions. Typical
applications are re-wiring integrated circuits and micromachining
AFM tips. Operation is similar to an SEM.
Integrated Reliability is a private laboratory providing Focused Ion
Beam, Acoustic Microscopy, Package Evaluation and Failure Analysis
services. This position is in San Diego, CA.

MICROSCOPE SYSTEM SERVICE ENGINEER
Maryland/Mid-Atlantic Region

optical, mechanical, and digital video subsystems for users of the
world's most sophisticated microscope imaging systems. We are seeking
a truly unique individual to blend the multiple skills required to
offer total technical support to our clients and to discover elegant
solutions to challenging new imaging needs.
Your work here will allow you investigate and resolve problems in
highly complex imaging systems from world leaders like Zeiss, Nikon,
and Olympus. Typical systems feature integrated, computer controlled,
micro-positioning mechanics, digital imagers, cooled CCD cameras,
lasers, high speed digital storage media, and illumination sources
covering the spectrum from near IR to Deep UV.
You will work trouble shooting and resolving problems in the client's
laboratory. You will be trained by manufacturers to supplement and
refine your skills. You will design solutions and build or specify
special hardware and software to meet new application requirements.
In order to do all of these things you must possess:
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and technical intuition
- A BS in Optical, Mechanical, Electronic Engineering, Computer
Science, or Physics.
- A few years of hands-on experience using and/or servicing computer
controlled microscope imaging systems, e.g., Zeiss LSM, CSM, and MPM
systems.
- Eagerness to receive specialized training
- A passion and talent for solving complex engineering problems
- Strong technical communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to design specialized solutions involving
combinations of optics, electronics, and software applications.
- Solid computer skills including fluency in C, C++ within both DOS
and UNIX environments.

from the pack if you have CAD experience, ability to interface with
outside vendors and shops to achieve a timely and appropriate
fabrication of hardware you design, an outgoing personality, and a
nose for inventive design opportunity.
