Materials Science and Engineering

REQUIRED GRADUATE COURSES

CORE PROGRAM

All graduate students admitted to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering during or after the Fall Semester of 1985 are required to pass at least five of the following courses as part of their coursework requirement:

All graduate students accepted as of fall 1997 are required to have a grade of B or better in their designated five core courses. Any course completed with a grade less than B will not count towards the core requirements.

At least one of these courses must be taken each semester, until the core requirement is completely satisfied. Special arrangements are available for students enrolled in the Bio-Engineering program. These students should consult with their graduate advisor prior to registration. Any requests for substitutions to this list must be approved by the Graduate Program Committee and should be submitted in writing by the student.

COLLOQUIUM REQUIREMENT

The Department Colloquia are carefully selected to acquaint the students with research in other areas or institutions. This is an essential part of their training; attendance is MANDATORY for all graduate students whether or not they are registered in ESM 697 and will be monitored. All students are required to complete the Colloquium course (ESM 697) with a grade of S, in each of their first two semesters.

TEACHING REQUIREMENT

All full-time graduate students must satisfactorily complete Teaching Techniques ESM 501 within their first year.

In addition, at least one semester of Practicum in Teaching ESM 698 is required of all students.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE(ESL) REQUIREMENT

Students assigned to ESL courses on the basis of the SPPEAK test must complete all assigned courses with a grade of B or better.
