The Department of Materials Science and Engineering is part of Stony Brook's College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS). The Dean of Engineering and Applied Sciences is responsible for all of the affairs of the College.
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering is responsible for managing the MS and Ph.D. programs in Materials Science and Engineering. The Department Chairman has overall responsibility for everything that occurs within the department, and he delegates responsibility for graduate academic matters to the Graduate Program Director who is assisted by the Graduate Program Committee.
Overall responsibility for all graduate academic matters on the campus belongs to the Dean of the Graduate School. The Graduate School sets overall policy regarding graduate programs and any issues related to its policies must be handled by its Dean. Matters related to policies of the Department are handled by the Graduate Program Director.
