The graduate course credit requirements for the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are described in the "Degree Requirements" section. Formal coursework includes the required Core Program and other courses ("Electives") appropriate to the degree programs. Appropriate graduate coursework includes most of the graduate courses offered by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in addition to the courses offered by the Physics and Chemistry Departments, as listed in the "Core Program."
Students may take other graduate courses outside the Department, but must obtain prior approval in writing from the Graduate Program Director in order to ensure that such courses will be used to satisfy the coursework requirements. As a general rule, graduate courses from departments such as Physics, Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, and Mechanical Engineering are likely to be approved, but courses in History, Philosophy or Romance Languages, for example, will not; although such courses may be of significant educational value to the student.
English as a Second Language (ESL) courses do not count toward the degree requirements, though students who are assigned to these courses must complete them with a grade of B or better in order to be awarded a graduate degree.
No undergraduate courses will be counted toward graduate degree requirements.
Transfer Credits
Students who have earned appropriate graduate coursework credits at other accredited institutions of higher education may transfer credit toward the satisfaction of the Department's degree requirements. The graduate credits must have been obtained with a minimum grade of B (or equivalent).
Transfer credits may be used simply to reduce the total number of credits required for the degree, without affecting other requirements, such as the core program requirement. More valuably, however, specific course equivalence may be assigned so the transfer credits can be used to satisfy certain requirements. All applications for transfer credit should be made in writing to the Graduate Program Director.
A complete list of graduate courses is provided at the end of this booklet. More detailed information about individual courses can be found on the Web at /courses.html#grad
