CHOOSING A RESEARCH ADVISOR

All graduate students in Materials Science & Engineering must identify a research advisor, who must also agree to advise the student. You must come to an agreement with a faculty member to be your research advisor by the end of your second semester in the program. Failure to do this will result in termination of your support, and possible dismissal from the program.

During their first semester of study, all graduate students should acquaint themselves with the faculty members of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in order to choose a research advisor. A list of faculty members and their areas of research interests is included in this packet.

As a guide, it is suggested that each student make an appointment with each of the faculty members in the Department and briefly discuss their research projects with them. A sign-off sheet for this purpose is enclosed. Students should obtain the signature of each professor after the appointment and then rank their preferences on the sheet. Return this sheet to the departmental office by the end of the first semester. The requests will be evaluated by the Graduate Program Committee as soon as possible after submission.

It should be emphasized that students, especially in their first year, should take time to carefully choose their advisors. Your advisor will be your supervisor for the next four or five years, so do not rush your decision. A departmental teaching assistantship does not obligate the student to work in the instructor's research program. If a student supported on a departmental TA line is assigned a desk in the laboratory, simply for administrative purposes, it does not constitute a commitment for the student to work for the faculty member, nor does it obligate the faculty member for further support of the student.
