A:
They are posted on the doors to their rooms, and here:

How do a I pay for the usage of the SEM, TEM, or XRD?
A:
Yes, there is a nominal fee to use the equipment. It only pays for the service contracts, upkeep, and minor supplies. There are no capital expenses or salaries.

I can tell you the rates for a given year and piece of equipment, since it varies from year to year.

Usage fees are charged by filling out a Materials Service Requisition. You will require a valid account number an signature. The signed form goes to me.

Q:
Can I use the TEM darkroom?
A:
Yep! But a few simple rules:
  • Bring your own supplies.
  • Take away your supplies.
  • Leave the room clean.
  • Keep an eye on the N2 tank.
  • Keep an eye on the vacuum pump.
  • Use the log book.
  • Pay attention to the lights.

Q:
What's the mix for the darkroom chemicals?
A:
Here's the mix:
Developer:
Kodak D19, 1packet/gal, mix at 52C, stir
Stop Bath:
Kodak indicator stop bath, 16ml/l, 1-gal, stir
Stop:
1 percent acetic acid Fixer:
follow instructions on package. Fixer:
Kodak Rapid Fixer, stir, 60C
1.9l H2O + 946ml A + 104ml B, mix, then add more H2O ---> 1 gal

Q:
How about the timing?
A:
Here you go:
For 2 sec exp, 4 min devel, 1 min stop, 4+min fix, 20+ water, and dry
If they come out cloudly, then fix for 1/2 hour and wash again and dry

Q:
Can I use the polishing room?
A:
Yep! But a few simple rules:
  • Bring your own supplies.
  • Take away your supplies.
  • Leave the room clean.
  • Always use running water in the drains.
  • Turn off the motors when you are finished.

Can I use the Philips Xray diffractometer?, i.e., be trained?
A:
Sure, read the Philips Xray Diffractometer page, then come see me.

A:

A:
Talk to him/her, not just his/her students in the lab.

How do I get a computer account for email?
A:
The department has forms for this, and you can do it online. Go to new account web page.

Q:
Well will Notes, Internet, etc.... service be restored?
A:
Call DoIT's hot-line at 632-4325.

Q:
How do I complain about the heat, cold, water leak, etc....
A:
Contact the West Campus Physical Plant at 2-6400.
Tell them your name, location, phone number, and complaint.

Q:
Do I have to have a web-page?
A:
We want everyone to promote their research.

Q:
Can I use the equipment in B205?
A:
You will need to talk to Prof. Sokolov or Prof. Rafailovich.

Q:
Can I use the equipment in B013?
A:
You will need to talk to Prof. Gouldstone and/or Sampath.

Q:
Can I use the equipment in B001?
A:
B001 is an instructional teaching lab with limited access for research purposes.

Can I use the equipment in 217?

You should talk to me and plan ahead.

How about the computer room on the second floor between the double glass doors?
A:
That space is booked by the Dean's Office.

How about the other rooms there and or 301?
A:
Those spaces are booked by the Dean's Office.

A:

See me; I'll train you. You'll need an x-ray badge.

How do I get the X-ray badge?

What are the SEM, X-ray, TEM costs?

A:
They are free.

A:
Maybe, it depends upon availability. Also, check the ln2-rules page.

Can I use the hoods in 213?
A:
Yes, just be neat, bring your own supplies, and remove your waste.

Q:
How do I get rid of my waste chemicals?
A:
Terry Hulse is the manager for waste at EHS. He schedules the waste pick-ups. He can be reached at: thulse@notes.cc.sunysb.edu or 2-6410. Our department now has regular pickups. An announcement is sent our monthly to remind users of the exact dates.

Where can I store equipment?
A:
In your own lab; their is no common/department storage.

Q:
Can't I store "shipping boxes" temporarily?
A:
Not really; cut them up and put them in the recycling bin.

Where do I get a key to a lab?
A:
Talk to the owner, file out a work request, give it to Bob Martin.

Q:
How do I get a network cable?
A:
Take a walk over to the Seawolves Store in the SAC.

How do I get an IP number?

How do I order gas cylinders?

  • Contact Karl Diehl at Karl.Diehl@stonybrook.edu
  • You must first submit a "Materials Service Requistion (SUSB-828) to encumber money into a "gas account".
  • Then you can contact Karl to place orders.

Q:
How do I get a gas regulator?
A:
Try Fisher or MSC......they have good prices. You will need the "CGA" number for the "cylinder gas adapter". For Nitrogen, you want CGA580.

Q: How do I buy something?
A: Follow this procedure:
1) Determine a distributer

2) Go to the departmental office

3) Ask for a "Purchase Order Requisition".
   (You will probably want a "pink" one).

4) Complete the form, including:
   a) date
   b) grant number
   c) distributers name, address, phone, fax, etc...
   d) department name
   e) item name, part#, quantity, cost, etc....
   f) local shipping information (usually a faculty name)
      f.1) include room where stuff will reside
   g) sign and date (usually a faculty signature)

5) Keep a copy of the requisition

6) Mail the rest of it to Grants Management (Research Services)

7) Wait for delivery
