ESM 334 : Materials Engineering

This course employs basic concepts learned in various introductory materials and engineering courses, to understand how materials are utilized in fundamental and advanced applications. To that end, the course is divided into three sections: (i) "Tough stuff", (ii) "Hot Stuff" and (iii) "Smart Stuff". Combined, these address issues of material operation and failure under normal and harsh conditions, high-temperature electrochemical devices (i.e. solid oxide fuel cells), thermal barrier coatings, electro-magnetic devices and shape memory alloys. Students are expected to have a basic background in materials science, but this course will give them a strong engineering perspective.
