ESG201-H Engineering Responses to Society
Outline for ESG201 Presentations and Reports
This document is intended to help you to provide a frame work for your
written research reports. You are not confined to use this format if you
feel that your topic does not fit neatly within this framework. You clearly
do not have to report on everything listed below but be selective and pick
out those elements that you think will tell the story you want to tell.
Title Page
Title of Report
Name of Participants
Date of Report
Abstract
1-2 paragraph giving a brief synopsis of your paper. Include a brief
description of your topic and the principal conclusions you arrived at.
Introduction
Introduce your topic to the reader.
Describe briefly why it is important to have an understanding of the topic
(importance to society, quality of life, safety issues etc).
What engineering considerations are needed to have an understanding of your
topic? (Scientific principles, design considerations, structural,
environmental, etc)
Provide a brief history.
Discussion
Identify the topical areas you want to discuss in the body of your paper.
These can include, but are not limited to:
Scientific basis of topic
What scientific principles are involved?
What research was done on topic?
Brief History of the topic
What caused the need by society to want to implement this technology?
Engineering considerations were used in implementing the technology
Design and Modeling of System Performance
Cost
Life Cycle
Innovation
Marketing
Human Factors (ergonomics)
Environmental
Safety and Health
Materials Selection
Economics
Manufacturing considerations
Cost Evaluations
Risk and Reliability
Quality Assurance
Toxicity
Social and Political Factors
What are the social and/or political consequences of implementing the technology?
Governmental regulations
Taxes (Cost to taxpayer)
Quality of life
Cultural
Cost-Benefit analysis
Advantages and Disadvantages of Implementing the Technology
Cost to society
Societal Benefits (Practical vs Aesthetic)
Environmental issues
Ethical issues
Conclusions
List your principal conclusions in order of importance
Critical Issues
Indicate what issues you think still need to be decided to fully implement
the technology
Lack of sufficient information
Long term effect of technology
Political and social issues
Economic issues
Esthetic issues
Page Limit
Individual reports should be a maximum of 3-5 Pages (Times Roman 12 font,
1.5 or two line spacing) including figures. A typed side is a page.
Group reports should be a maximum of 8-10 Pages (Times Roman 12 font, 1.5 or
two line spacing) including figures.
Assessment
Presentations will be assessed on preparedness, knowledge, content and
quality of presentation, perceivable amount of effort, and cohesiveness of
the group, groupâ??s ability to stick to time schedule, elicit class
participation and to answer questions.
Reports will be assessed on content and quality, language, perceivable
amount of effort spent, amount of one's own work rather than use of too
many references. i.e. a report written by a student in his/her own language
after reading several articles on the topic will be rated higher than a
report citing too many sentences off other references. Hard copy of the
group report is due at the beginning of the presentation.
Important: Anyone/group involved in plagiarism of any type, reason and
amount will receive a failing grade and will be reported to the academic
committee. There is zero tolerance for plagiarism in this class.
