- Q:
I have a problem with HKLMNOP?
- A:
No problem, we are willing to help. But,
before you come to the Undergraduate Program Director (G. Halada),
please do the following:
- Collect all documentation
- Transcript
- Petition
- Letter from professor
- Add/Drop sheet
- etc.......
- Clearly think out your problem, before you state the problem.
As engineers you will need to develop information, and
then be able to accurately and tersely present the information.
- Q:
Who is the Undergraduate Program Director?
- A:
Right now, it is Prof. Halada. He is in room 308.
ghalada@notescc.sunysb.edu
- Q:
How do I contact Prof. XYZ?
- A:
Check the phone and email lists.
All of the faculty have office hours. They all
accept appointments. You can also stop by their office to see if
they have a free moment.
- Q:
Can I use course X as a substitute for course Y that is written within
the official ESG prescription?
- A:
As long as course X has the following qualities.
- It has at least and equivalent seniority standing; i.e., you could use a
4XX course to substitute for a 2XX - but not visa versa.
- The course is at least of the same credit level.
- The prequisites of the course are at least as rigorous at that of the
official course.
- The substitute makes sense with regards to the students Specialization.
Comment: The student needs to generate a petition to formalize such
substitutes and this must be approved by the Undergraduate Program Director.
- Q:
Can the two design electives of a Specialization be changed?
- A:
No
Comment: If you think that you have a special case then see the
Undergraduate Program Director to discuss this.
- Q:
Do you want a copy of my CV or resume?
- A:
Yep, we would like to keep this with your
file in the dept's office. This will good
for you and for us. Firstly, we can help
edit/refine your document. Secondly, we
can use this to help you get awards,
scholarships, etc......
- Q:
How do I write a CV or resume?
- A:
Come by the office, we will direct you
to the appropriate advisor and provide
samples.
- Q:
What is the best why to schedule my classes?
- A:
Plan this out in advance, if not several semesters
in advance. We pretty much know when the classes
are being taught, up to 2 years in the future.
- Q:
How do I prevent delays in graduation?
- A:
The biggest way is to watch out for the
prereqs and minimum-grade-requirements.
- Q:
Can a "P/NC" course be used for the graduation requirements of the ESG
major.
- A:
No - and I really mean NO. If the course is a required course that needs
a letter grade, then the P/NC option can not be used. You will need to retake
the course to obtain a letter grade. Also, courses can not be transferred into
the ESG major under the P/NC; i.e., CHE 131, 132 and 133 (which can be used to
substitute for CHE 198, 199, although they are not the recommended courses) can
not be used if you have chosen the P/NC grading option. Again, you will need to
retake these courses
- Q:
I need some advice. I need to complete 7 courses next semester in
order to graduate by summer (or fall, as the case may be). Which courses should
I take?
- A:
Quite frankly ... you have left your run a bit late. (This does NOT mean
that we are unsympathetic to your predicament.) You would need to take an credit
overload since you will carry a load of > 21 credits. And ... you will probably
have scheduling conflicts with so many courses. My advice is that you decide to
split this load over two semesters so that your grades are not compromised. If
your GPA is >3.0 then I would very seriously suggest that you consider taking
some graduate courses so that your future potential as a graduate student can be
addressed. You might even be able to partake in the ESG "5 year masters
program". Another option is to take some courses during the summer (at USB or
elsewhere) or to establish whether 499's and 488's can be used for your major.
Finally, do not take on heavy credit loads that will be sure to compromise your
ability to obtain a passing grade.
- Q:
Is there a department FAQ, not just ESG?
- A:
Yep, check out the FAQ.
