Phase Separating Polymer Blended Films
- Dr. Alamgir Karim, NIST
- Abstract:
The perturbing influence of geometrical and chemical interfaces on
polymer blend phase separation is examined by atomic force microscopy (AFM).
The enrichment of one polymer in preference to another at a geometrical (filler)
interface can have a significant impact on the morphology of the blend, which
in turn can affect the overall properties of the filled material. In highly
immiscible blends, it has been proposed that spherical waves resembling a target
pattern develop about the filler when one blend component is strongly attracted
to it. Recent computer simulations show these patterns become overwhelmed by
the spinodal decomposition pattern when the scale of phase separation becomes
sufficiently large compared to the targets, so these filler induced structures
could be transient states during processing. Likewise, simulations of
fluid-fluid phase separation on a chemically modulated striped pattern shows the
symmetry breaking of phase separation in the plane of the modulated stripes
with the development of transverse checkerboard morphology. Our experiments using AFM are
aimed towards confirming these predicted morphologies in phase separating thin
polymer blend films.
