x-ray, and other surface sensitive techniques in
providing information on the relationship between morphology

- Contacts and Interconnects for Silicon Memory Chips
- The density of Dynamic Random Access Memory chips (DRAMS)
is increasing by roughly 4X every three years. The increase
in density is due to both improvements in lithography and
improvements in cell structure. The increase in density has
also been partly due to impovements in processes for fabricating
contacts and interconnects. In this presentation, a number
of processes for forming contacts and interconnects in 256M
DRAMS are discussed, including boro-phosphosilicate glass (BPSG)
deposition, borderless contact etching, tungsten stud formation,
and chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP).

- Neutrons: The Kinder, Gentler Probe of Condensed Matter
Neutrons play an increasingly important role in the characterization
of advanced materials. They provide information that complements
rather than competes with that provided by other scattering
probes. Although neutrons require heroic efforts to produce,
the techniques for using them are not particularly difficult,
and with the advent of sufficient user friendly facilities,
are becoming a routine tool in the arsenal of expanding
numbers of materials scientists. This talk will review some of
the ways that neutrons are used in Materials Science, and
the facilities available at the
High Flux Beam Reactor
at BNL.
