Giving to Materials Science and Engineering

If you would like to give to the department, you can give online by clicking on icon or follow this link.Contributions from our alumni and friends will help us to improve our undergraduate and graduate labs, establish scholarships for our students and to enhance the visibility of our department through seminars and symposiums.

Alumni Spotlight

Join our Facebook page to stay in touch with your fellow graduates ... Alumni of the Materials Science and Engineering Department, Stony Brook U. ... or join our LinkedIn page. Either way, keep in touch!!

For ESG undergraduates, please take a moment to fill out our new Alumni Survey available online at Survey. Your responses will help us shape the future of the ESG program.

If you are interested in seeing your story posted here, send us a picture and a short blurb about what you are doing or attach your resume and we will add you to our Alumni Wall of Fame. Send your information to Chandrani.Roy(at)stonybrook.edu.

Scott Perl (Class of 2008)

After graduating Stony Brook with my B.E. and B.S. in Engineering Science and Geology, respectively, I developed an interest in integrating the science and engineering of planetary missions. Using five years of experience performing research under Prof. Scott McLennan and working on the Mars Exploration Rover mission, my goal in graduate school at Purdue University is to build and improve systems and methodologies used in manned and robotic planetary exploration. I plan on completing my Ph.D. here at Purdue and to eventually apply to NASA’s astronaut corps as a mission specialist.

John Baglione (Class of 2008)

Since July of 2008, soon after graduating, I have been in my first role in the Structures Sourcing division as a Supplier Quality Engineer in Cincinnati, Ohio.  In this role, I am working with many of our suppliers that make composite structures for us.  Essentially, I am part of the team that reviews the parts drawings with engineering and relays all of the requirements needed to the supplier so they meet the print.  When parts do not conform to specification, I look to troubleshoot with the engineers and our suppliers together to resolve the issues.  The materials science course work I had in the Engineering Science program has really helped me to be knowledgeable on the subject of composites, and therefore be competent when speaking on issues arising with the parts.

Min Yi Chen (Class of 2001)
Process Engineer, Chromalloy

I do not think I would of become who I am today if it not for the ESG program at Stony Brook. The broad course load in mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing specializing in materials helped to give us a better understanding of the big picture, yet know more about one thing: the kind of skill required for management and having the ability to work on a variety of projects versus the "other" engineering majors which I found did not catch on as easily to the entire process flow of a company. ESG also trains you more in writing, working in groups, and presentations which teaches you communication skills which is essential if you want to work in a company.

Michael D’Lallo (Class of 2005)
Corning Tropel, Process Engineer III

Well, it has been just little over a while since I made the transition from a full-time student on Long Island to a full-time employee in Fairport, New York, a suburb of Rochester, at a company called Corning Tropel.  It is a division of Corning which designs, engineers, and manufactures Metrology Equipment, Laser Optics, and precision optics. I have been working here for about 6 months as a Manufacturing Engineer in the Metrology Department using Instantaneous Phase Measuring Interferometry. After a successful 6-month stint, I will now be moving into the coatings department, based on experience and educational background, for coating the precision and Laser optics.
