Hunting for a job or an internship? Sign up with Zebra Net at the Career Center and learn about the different vehicles available to you to make your hunt more successful. ZebraNet: https://www.myinterfase.com/stonybrook/student/
Accessible right through your ZebraNet account, this network enables you to connect with alumni and friends of Stony Brook who have volunteered to conduct informational interviews with students. An informational interview is a career research technique; you interview a professional to learn more about his/her career and determine if it's the right for you. You can also ask these professionals for advice on job search techniques and industry specific expectations for entry level candidates.
Many students want to understand the connection between their field of study and specific occupations. Though some of you will work in a profession directly related to your major, others will find jobs because you have a college degree and possess qualities and skills that employers value. It is important to remember that these skills can be developed not only through course work, but by doing internships, getting involved in campus activities and working part-time. http://www.career.sunysb.edu/content/students/understanding-professions-and-careers
There are several ways to find an internship. Each section below can help you get one step closer to your ideal internship opportunity.

Venture for America (VFA), nonprofit organization, announced its official launch and the acceptance of applications for its inaugural pool of "fellows," approximately 50, selected from the graduating class of 2012. The organization hopes to "spur enterprise and encourage entrepreneurship in parts of the U.S. that struggle to attract top college graduates."
Beginning in fall, fellows will take jobs at startup companies in economically-challenged U.S. cities. VFA will match the fellows with startup companies in "industries of great potential or future importance" (e.g., energy, biotech, and materials sciences) from targeted cities including Detroit, Providence and New Orleans. The startup will hire fellows at a discounted salary of up to $38,000 per year. After two years, the startup may retain the fellow under new terms of employment.
The organization models its selection process after Teach for America. Fellows will be selected through a competitive application process that includes peer and faculty recommendations, multiple interviews, case studies, business plan submissions and behavioral exercises. Once selected, fellows will have the ability to express preferences for regions and industries of interest, but will be obliged to accept their assignments. The fellows will be placed in a cohort "to encourage a sense of shared experience" and will share housing. Before arriving at their assignment, fellows will attend a five-week "boot camp" consisting of training programs, lectures, discussions and meetings with experienced entrepreneurs.
After two years, the VFA and its partners will provide a fellow, who is determined to have performed the best during his or her fellowship, $100,000 in either seed investment for a new venture or support for an existing company. VFA is currently accepting applications. More information regarding the VFA fellows program is available at: http://ventureforamerica.org/fellows
VFA also will maintain a centralized recruitment infrastructure for start-ups and early-stage companies across the country. Program applications will be included in a database that will be made available to approved companies for recruitment purposes. Visit VFA's website

Abstract
The Postdoctoral Research Associate and International Researcher (PIR) program offers scientists and scholars who recently earned the doctorate degree to perform postdoctoral research at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL). In addition, the program enables international faculty, scientists, and scholars to work at the laboratory on a temporary basis.
PIR participants gain experience working in a world-class national laboratory and the opportunity to learn more about their chosen fields in the INL's departments and interdisciplinary research initiatives. The PIR program is managed by the Administration of Professional and Scientific Personnel (APSP), a unit of Washington State University (WSU), in collaboration with INL Education Programs. Program participants are hired as WSU faculty members, stationed at the INL, which provides them a valuable package of salary and benefits as well as faculty status and the rights, privileges and responsibilities of university faculty members.
Postdoctoral Research Associates are salaried, research-training positions for college or university graduates who have recently earned doctoral degrees. Research Associates work in one of the INL's on-going scientific or technical projects, under the supervision of laboratory scientists, engineers, and/or administrators who support and mentor them. The Postdoctoral Research Associate Program provides a bridge to professional employment, often at the INL. Appointments are limited to three years. Postdoctoral Research Associates who are not citizens or permanent legal residents of the United States are designated as International Postdoctoral Research Associates and must obtain valid work authorization through WSU or directly from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
The International Researcher Program promotes collaborations and international relationships by providing the means for faculty members and visiting scientists or scholars, who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents, to work on research projects at the laboratory. Washington State University (WSU) appoints them as visiting or adjunct faculty members, stationed at the INL. WSU's International Programs Office assists international researchers in obtaining the proper visas and maintaining legal status.
Eligibility Postdoctoral Research Associates are selected on the basis of education, experience, publication record, references, and specifically how these demonstrate the ability to contribute to research at the laboratory, either on-going or projected.
International Research Associates typically contact a fellow researcher at the laboratory to propose a project to be undertaken at the INL. The interest and financial resources of the INL researcher and authorization of supervisory personnel are determining factors in selecting International Researchers.
United States citizenship is not required. However, researchers who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States will have restricted access to computer resources and facilities, and limited access to information technologies.

Non-use of illegal drugs is initially determined through an initial drug screen and review of the individual's Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP). Once the Security Clearance is granted, individuals will then be subject to random and for-cause drug testing.
During the course of the federal background investigation, the other following areas will also be examined, including employment and school records, criminal history, financial and credit history, academic performance and attendance, and residence history. If performance in any of these or other areas would preclude eligibility for a security clearance, graduate students interested in the program should not apply.
